About SoundExchange
SoundExchange is the organisation designated under US law to collect and distribute digital performance royalties for sound recordings played on non-interactive services -- satellite radio, internet radio, cable music channels and simulcast broadcast streams. It is not a store and does not distribute music.
What it does is collect money that is owed regardless of whether you have registered. When your recording is played on SiriusXM, Pandora's radio tiers or an internet radio station, a statutory royalty is generated. If no one has registered the recording, that money sits unclaimed. This royalty stream is separate from and additional to the revenue your distributor collects from on-demand platforms -- labels frequently leave it on the table without realising it exists.
