Frequently asked questions
Is a split sheet legally binding?
Signed by all contributors it is strong evidence of what was agreed, and it is what PROs and publishers rely on. The document includes the provisions the industry standard templates carry — a sole-writers confirmation, a samples warranty, counterparts, binding effect, and governing law. For high-value catalogue or unusual arrangements, have a music lawyer review it.
When should we fill it in?
In the session, before anyone leaves. Splits are far harder to agree once a song starts earning.
Does this cover master ownership too?
No. A split sheet covers the composition — the songwriting side. Master ownership is a separate agreement between the performers and whoever funded the recording. That is also why roles like primary artist, featured artist, and producer are not offered here: they describe the recording, not the composition.
